Cool Reading Sites

Scholastic
This web site is designed with students, parents, and teachers in mind. Students can access up-to-date news from a kid’s point-of-view, play learning games, chat with authors, read about excellent books, and much more. There are links for family resources such as ways to help your child in school, developmental learning information, ideas for educational outings, and many other exciting things.
Time for Kids
http://www.timeforkids.com/TFK/yourturn/index.html
This site is from Time magazine. It is an interactive site that asks
students to respond to a poll question. There is an article to go with
the poll question that gives more information. Then the student can read
the results of the poll. These are some intriguing questions for kids.
There is a mailbag for children to respond.
News Snapshot
http://www.nytimes.com/learning/teachers/snapshot/index.html
This is a current events activity that uses a photograph from the New
York Times. It breaks down the article into the simple 5 W’s a reporter
uses when writing an article. There is a student worksheet and extension
activities. The photos will engage the student, give them background
knowledge about the article, and then the original article can be read –
great way to preview.
PBS Between the Lions
http://pbskids.org/lions/
This website was so engaging. It had many stories to choose from and
after finishing the stories it had games and activities to go along with
the ‘book’. This website goes along with the PBS series ‘Between the
Lions’. The best part of this site is that it is designed for adults and
children to WORK TOGETHER. There are notes to help guide the adult. The
site also offers other suggested books when the child finds particular
stories they are interested in.

Mystery Net
Students read mysteries and solve them. They can also create their own mysteries.

Students can read funny poems online, and can even write their own.
There are poetry games, and a rhyming dictionary.
http://www.eduplace.com/kids/games.html
Fun reading and language arts games for kids. These games were engaging
and educational at the same time. Students pick the game and the grade
level, so the games are at the right reading level.
Word Central
Students can look up words in the student dictionary, build their own dictionary, and play Daily Buzzword.
